A look at the Young People’s Panel

As we look to the future, we’re evolving our approach to better support the next generation of the Scottish Cycling community. Our aim is to ensure that our youth programmes remain relevant, meaningful, and empowering—offering young people a platform to share their views and directly influence our work. This evolution has been guided by valuable feedback from both current and past panel members, as well as a recognition of the new challenges and skill sets young people need at this stage in their lives.

In the meantime, we caught up with current panel member Aidan to hear about his journey on the Young People’s Panel and what it’s meant to him.

Could you share insights into your experience of being part of the Scottish Cycling Young People’s Panel, including the key skills and qualities you developed during your time?

“My involvement and experience with the Young People Panel (YPP) have greatly contributed to building my confidence in various ways. One of the most significant achievements for me was obtaining my qualifications. During my time with the YPP, I was able to earn an SCQF Level 5 in the Benefits of Sport and Physical Activity, as well as an SCQF Level 5 in Goal Setting. Attaining these qualifications has had a profound impact on my life.

Having a learning disability has always made school a difficult and discouraging environment for me, which ultimately led to my decision to leave education at the age of 14. However, the confidence I gained through this experience, along with the qualifications I achieved, allowed me to pursue work experience at Nevis Range (a World Cup venue). I am now employed full-time with them.

Additionally, attending residentials, as well as The Scottish Cycling Conference and Awards, provided me with invaluable opportunities to connect with members of the cycling community. These events greatly expanded my knowledge and understanding of the field.”

What inspired you to become a member of the Young People’s Panel?

“I was inspired to join the Young People Panel due to my passion for downhill mountain biking. I am an active member of a large club, the West Highland Wheelers, and my mother serves as a commissaire for British and Scottish Cycling. I also had the privilege of serving on the committee for our club, where I represented the voices of young people. I found great satisfaction in supporting younger members to ensure their views were heard and advocating for actions to be taken based on their feedback.”

Which aspect of your experience did you find most fulfilling or enjoyable?

“The aspect I found most enjoyable was attending our residential. It provided an excellent opportunity for us to come together, share our experiences, and exchange thoughts. As we each had different interests across various cycling disciplines, it was fascinating to hear about the diverse passions and accomplishments of others. We also participated in workshops, which helped us build confidence and gain valuable experience. In the evenings, we fully embraced the social aspect, perhaps a little too much, by keeping our mentors engaged well into the night!”

Would you recommend the Young People’s Panel to others who are considering joining and if so, why?

“Yes, I would highly encourage others to join the Scottish Cycling Young People Panel. It offers a fantastic opportunity to earn qualifications, connect with others, and gain a deeper understanding of all aspects of cycling. This experience can open the door to numerous exciting opportunities.”

What advice would you give to individuals interested in joining the panel?

“Commitment is essential to fully benefit from the experience. This is a valuable opportunity, and if you dedicate yourself, you will gain a great deal from it while also having plenty of fun!”
