Additional Regional Funds awarded to support events in Scotland

Scottish Cycling announces trio of awards from the Regional Sport Development funds to lay the ground for an exciting 2026 season of racing.

The following events and initiatives have been supported by the fund in this first round of 2026:

Edinburgh RC Gifford Road Races (£750)

ERC have ran the Gifford Road Races for a number of years, often seen as the curtain raiser to the Scottish Road Racing calendar. In 2025, they trialled an approach of introducing a standalone women’s only race between the existing Open E123 and Open 34 races. With 30 entrants, it was one of the biggest female fields across all disciplines last year. Additionally, they placed a focus on subsidising entries of those looking to race for the first time, with a particular focus on Women and Young People. 75% of these first timer racers then went ono to take part in further races that season.

This years award recognises this sound approach to bolstering participation, and supports the continuation of this for a second year.

Peebles Cycling Club – launch of a new Women’s only Road Race (£755)

Peebles Cycling Club (PCC) sought funding to support the launch of a women’s‑only road race, created in response to the long‑standing challenge of attracting female riders to their Open event.

As a club, they are committed to helping grow women’s participation in UK road racing, particularly for novice riders who often lack accessible entry‑level opportunities.

This dedicated race aims to provide a supportive, competitive environment that encourages more women to enter the sport and progress with confidence.

The funds requested will cover approximately half of the essential costs required to deliver a safe, compliant, and efficiently run road race including mandatory safety measures, traffic management, and event services.

PCC will fund the remaining costs, but external support is crucial to make this new event viable in its first year, especially as they predict a deficit.

East & Central region – purchase of additional equipment to support events (£810)

Supporting clubs through having shared resources, such as equipment that can enable the safe delivery of events is an important element of the support that Scottish Cycling can provide to organisers.

This request for additional equipment has come from various clubs across the region, with wooden posts and scrim, no waiting cones, and additional signage identified as current gaps in provision.

The Regional Sport Development Fund was made possible thanks to the passing of a motion at the 2023 Scottish Cycling AGM, and is available across three regions: East & Central, South-West and West.

The purpose of the fund is to simply:

  • Support new events
  • Support volunteers
  • Support riders

The current funds available as of 13th February is as follows:

East & Central: £4249.23

South-West: £3845.77

West: £4080.65

In the first instance, clubs in these regions should contact the Club Development team by emailing ‘[email protected]

The next deadline for applications is 1st March 2026.
