Cycle Speedway season beckons for 2025.

Cycle speedway is an action-packed sport that brings high-speed racing to compact, oval dirt tracks. Riders go head-to-head in short but intense races, typically covering four laps in just 35-40 seconds. It’s fast, it’s tactical, and it’s a whole lot of fun!

As one of the most accessible forms of cycle racing, cycle speedway is open to all ages and abilities. Whether you’re looking for a new cycling challenge, a way to stay fit, or just want to be part of a thriving community, this sport has something for everyone. Plus, it’s a great way to sharpen your bike-handling skills, which can benefit riders in other disciplines like mountain biking, road racing, and BMX.

Scotland has a growing cycle speedway scene, with clubs in Edinburgh, Fife, Glasgow and the Borders welcoming new riders. They all provide great options for getting involved (often including access to a bike) and you can find their contact details on the Club Finder Tool.

With the new season kicking off in March 2025, there’s never been a better time to get started. Following the success of the first Scottish Cycle Speedway National Championships we’re looking to build on the momentum and encourage more clubs to join the Cycle Speedway Scottish League.

This year’s senior team competition will see Glasgow Cyclones, Northumbria Vikings, Edinburgh Falcons, and Fife Cyle Speedway battling it out for top honours. Meanwhile, juniors and women’s races will be individual events, making it even easier for new riders to get involved without the pressure of a team format. The four senior clubs will also be competing at this level, alongside Border Raiders.  The individual format also means that you can join at any time in the season, so if you don’t get started until later in the year, or just fancy giving it a try without committing to a series of races then these are the ones for you.

Getting involved is simple – just reach out to your local cycle speedway club and they will be happy to help you get started.  Additionally, cycle speedway clubs are very happy to host taster sessions for any other clubs that might interested. For example, if Dundee or Falkirk riders want to try cycle speedway, they could visit Fife Cycle Speedway for an introductory session. Clubs don’t need a dedicated cycle speedway track to offer sessions—they can run them on grass, making it more accessible to a wider range of riders.  If you’re interested or want more information, get in touch with Ruth at [email protected].

So why not give it a go? Whether you’re a seasoned cyclist or a total beginner, cycle speedway is an exciting way to test your skills, meet like-minded riders, and experience the thrill of racing!
