Reid and Watson light up Scottish BMX Championships

The Scottish National BMX Championships took place under the lights at Broadwood on Wednesday evening, a fantastic setting for some thrilling racing.

Blessed with dry, mild conditions on a November evening, Broadwood, the home of Cumbernauld Centurions, looked majestic under the floodlights, with racers excited to take a shot at a coveted national title.

Fast and furious shoulder-to-shoulder racing is what our Females gave us, with three thrilling motos (rounds) setting up a barnstorming final. She may be younger than her two closest competitors, but Eilidh Watson (BMX Widow Photography) put together a string of races that belied her age, winning all four duels to take the Female 13-14 title.

Pushing her close were Female 17+ champion Tillie McCrum (BMX Widow Photography) and Alexis McCartney (Alan’s BMX), who took gold in the Female 15-16 category. McCrum would lead, only miss out by a tyre width in the third moto, whilst McCartney got the hole shot in the final, but again couldn’t hold off a charging Watson.

In the Open races it was great to see Cameron Reid (Cumbernauld Centurions) back from long-term injury, and he showed little in the way of rustiness as like Watson he dominated proceedings. Flying out of the gate, he would post a quick opening moto, each of his subsequent races following a similar pattern as he wrapped up the Male 17-29 Scottish title.

There was much closer racing in the Open 15-16 and 13-14 events, Lewis Cook (Centurions) taking the former with a clean sweep, saving his best until last with a swift clocking in the final. Silver would go to Jack Cameron-O’Donough (Centurions), with Lewis Collins-Nimmo (Western Titans) rounding out the podium.

In the 13-14 equivalent Brodie Geddes (Centurions) also went through the rounds unbeaten to take the title, with David Fairlie (Centurions) and Cooper McCrum (BMX Widow) rounding out the podium.

Huge thanks to Cumbernauld Centurions for making this Championship happen so late in the season, and of course to all the volunteers on the night.

With 2025 fast approaching, there are just two National Championships left this year; Cyclocross at Irvine and the Senior Track Championships at the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome 10 days before Christmas.
