Scottish Cycling reveals new investment to get more women and girls on bikes

Scottish Cycling today reveals details of new investment that has been introduced to help clubs put on more female focused cycling activity.

After launching its Women & Girls Strategy in October, Scottish Cycling has been working with clubs and individuals to provide more opportunities for females to get involved in cycling, this latest step aiming to grow the number of women and girls involved in cycling through affiliated clubs.

We understand that every club is unique. That’s why this investment is designed to be flexible—supporting clubs to deliver tailored programmes that reflect the specific needs of their local area, whilst ensuring it aligns to achieving our overarching outcome of getting more women and girls on bikes.

The outcome is to help clubs grow their female membership in a sustainable way. By doing so, we can expand the opportunities available to women and girls, creating more pathways into the sport and ensuring they feel supported, welcomed, and inspired to ride.

What’s on offer?

We are encouraging clubs from every corner of Scotland to consider applying for support from our staff team, idea sharing with likeminded clubs, and funding of up to £1,200, to deliver activity specifically aimed at women and girls. The aim of the fund is to attract more women and girls to cycling and introduce them in a fun, social and safe environment aiming to lead onto more opting to join cycling clubs.

We encourage creative ideas that will attract more women and girls, but some examples of activity may include:

  • Delivering a structured block of introductory cycling sessions for women and/or girls, with an emphasis on enjoyment and confidence-building
  • Organising a block of led rides for women and/or girls to encourage regular participation and club connection

The support is aimed at creating new opportunities, especially in areas or communities where little or no provision currently exists.

We recognise the importance of engaging young girls as the future of our sport. Therefore, we’re especially interested in supporting projects that create meaningful and accessible cycling opportunities for under 18s.
