Scottish National Youth & Junior Track Championships Report

With the weather in the west turning showery it was nice to get into the velodrome for the Scottish Cycling Youth and Junior Track Championships 2026. Following on from Saturday’s fine performances, the riders looked set for another day of action.

It was a day comprised of sprints, time trials, Scratch and Points races and we started with qualifying for the Youth A Female and Open events. Filtering down to four riders in each category, Femke McKenna got the better of her Glasgow Riderz teammate Mairi Nicholson to claim Gold and take the title for 2026.

Fighting it out for the final medal were Jasmine Grieve (Spokes Racing Team) and Sarah McCormac (Edinburgh RC) with the Bronze going to Jasmine. In the Open event it was a real tussle between Micah Myles (Edinburgh RC) and Jake Davidson (Team Ohten) with the win going the way of the Edinburgh rider. With Jake being ineligible for the championship, the runoff for Bronze between Matty Jackson (Private Member) and Ezra Ndiuini (Glasgow Riderz) was actually a fight for the final two podium spots, Silver going to Ezra and Matty taking Bronze.

Next up were the Youth C 500m Time Trials and in the Female race the top spot went to Isla Sim (Johnstone Wheelers CC) with an excellent time of 42.149, with Falkirk Junior BC rider Gemma Tattersall claiming Silver in 47.068. The second fastest time of 44.242 was actually posted Sophie Tomb of Glasgow Riderz but was non-counting for the championship. Bronze went to Ashley Fraser of Johnstone Wheelers CC in a time of 48.814.

In the Open race we only had two competitors, both from Johnstone Wheelers CC and the win went to Rhuari Toole in 43.887 with Magnus Ogg finishing in 48.040.

Now it was the turn of the Youth Bs to set a time over two laps of the track. In the Female competition we had three riders, or in this case, three Glasgow Riderz. Emma Nicholson came out top with a time of 40.045 to take Gold with Elisabeth Tedd finishing in 45.482 for Silver and Zunairah Mold with 47.880 for Bronze.

In the Open race times would be closer but out in front was Freddie Ball (Deeside Thistle CC) with a time of 38.247. A close contest between Toni Lai (Glasgow Riderz) and Alasdair Ogg (Johnstone Wheelers CC) saw Toni finish in 39.234 to Alasdair’s 39.491, Silver to Toni and Bronze to Alasdair.

Now we had our first bunch race with the Youth C riders racing over 3km, the Open and Female Scratch events combined. A thrilling race over twelve laps of the track saw three girls move ahead with Isla Sim taking the win and the title. Coming home in second spot was Sophie Tomb but again she would have to cede Silver to Gemma Tattershall due to non-championship status. Bronze went Zoe

Martin of the Royal Albert CC. In the Open, again it was down to two Johnstone Wheelers with Ruari Toole once again getting the better of his teammate Magnus Ogg.

Onto the first of the Junior events for the second day of the championships and we started with the 1km Time Trial, Open and Female events. Facing four laps of the track in the Female race were three riders, all from different teams. Taking the Bronze medal was Kasey Park (Solas Cycling) in a time of 1:21.295. Two seconds quicker in the Silver position was Eva Murphy (Liv Cycling Club – Halo Films) in 1:19.018. Nothing could touch Mairi Nicholson’s time of 1:15.032 to take Gold.

In the Open race times were very tight with three riders hitting the 53km/h mark. Fraser Gemmell (Spokes Racing Team) posted 1:07.300 with Micah Myles coming home in 1:07.522. Andrew Levinson (Shibden Apex RT) was next in 1:07.856 but this would only see him finish in 4th place as the winning time came from Sam Martin (Team Ohten) who fired home in a time of 1:04.853, a superb time. Another bunch event for the Youth C riders, the Points race saw the open and female riders take on 24 laps of the track.

Isla Sim of Johnstone Wheelers was ready for this event and took all four of the sprints to end on a total of 25 points and secure the title. Her teammate Ruari Toole finished second in three of the four dashes for the line and secured the Open title from yet another Johnstone Jet in Magnus Ogg. Sophie Tomb finished 3rd overall but ineligibility for the championship meant Gemma Tattershall took Silver with Zoe Martin in Bronze.

Another Points race, this time for the Junior riders over 80 laps, saw a very strong entry from the Spokes RT riders. Zach Barbour opened their account winning the first two sprints, and would take two more including the final double point crossing of the line. However, this would only win him the silver medal on this occasion as Andrew Levinson took the 3rd and 4th sprints and kept going, managing to put a lap on everyone else.

With one more sprint in the bag he had the points and didn’t even need to contest the final, finishing with 39 points to Barbour’s 35. Consistency saw Fraser Corfield finish with 17 points to claim Bronze for the Spokes team.

Time now for the putt, putt of the derny as Ian Fraser piloted the bike onto the track for the Junior Keirin events. In the Female race it was a Glasgow Riderz 1-2 with Mairi Nicholson getting the better of her teammate Femke McKenna, Kasey Park in 3rd position for Solas Cycling. In the Open, first to cross the line was Team Ohten’s Jake Davidson but the title went to Micah Myles with Glasgow Riderz again rounding out the podium, Ezra Ndiuini in Silver and Kai Parker in Bronze. That left two more Scratch races, the Youth A Open 10km followed by the Female

event incorporating the Junior and Youth A & B riders all together. In the Open race Andrew Levinson and Micah Myles took off and lapped the field with Levinson winning out as they crossed the line. Bronze went to Thomas MacLeod of the Falkirk Junior Bike Club. In the Female event, it was a spirited race that combined three different categories, and was possibly the most hotly contested bunch race of the day. Eve Fairbairn (Liv Cycling Club – Halo Films) won out to take the Junior Gold with her teammate Eva Murphy collecting Silver and Kasey Park in Bronze.

The Youth As saw Zara Main (Deeside Thistle CC) got the better of Millie Boothman (Glasgow Riderz) with Edinburgh RC’s Lucy Sweeney collect Bronze. And finally, the Youth B title went to Eilidh Scally of Johnstone Wheelers with Zunairah Mold and Elisabeth Tedd of Glasgow Riderz taking Silver and Bronze.

All that was left was for Scottish Cycling’s Endurance coach, Evan Oliphant to present the medals and finish off a fine weekend of racing hosted by the Johnstone Jets.
