Young Team claim top spot at Inter-regionals as Inglis takes the win in Bradford

The Scotland National Team claimed the victory at the British inter-regional Cyclocross Championships in Yorkshire on Sunday, while Scot Grace Inglis claimed victory in the elite event.

Inter-regional Championships

A strong Scottish team headed down the road to Bradford for the British inter-regional championships – with expectations of medals in mind.

The format saw a relay and short-track event on the Sunday with the traditional national series round on the Saturday – the combined results weighted by points and determining which team was the winner.

Saturday’s racing started strong with racing saw strong rides from Eilidh Scally and Isla Reekie – both in the top three of the Under 14 event, with Josh Stewart’s Under 16 fifth place enough to take Scotland into the second – trailing Wales, but only narrowly.

Sunday’s relay went well with both the Scotland Boys team of Gregor McNaught, Stewart, Lewis McAusland and Rhuairdh Fulton; and the Girls team of Mairi Dowens, Scally,
Emie Smith and the aforementioned Reekie coming home in second place in their respective relays.

Rhuairdh Fulton’s second place in Under 16’s and Eilidh Scally also in second in the Under 14 short track race. The results alongside strong showings from the rest of the team would be enough for Scotland to take the win!

National Trophy

There would more success in the elites in the mudfest that Yorkshire would provide. The course battered by the rain and the youths, became treacherous for the women, and it was Grace Inglis who took top spot.

Starting right from the back of the field, the Scottish rider – previously of Muckle CC – tore through the field, using that mountain bike nous to good use. The former Scottish champion charged into the lead on lap three of six and it would be a position she would not relinquish.

Hands aloft over the line, Inglis finished absolutely spent – she becomes the first Scottish woman to win a UCI-level cyclocross race since Anna Flynn in the third round of last years’ National Trophy in Paignton.

The next and final National Trophy round comes from Irvine Beach on the 2-3 January.
