UEC European Youth Championships
Four young Scots travelled to Jonkoping in Sweden for the UEC MTB Youth European Championships.
Racing started on Tuesday with the individual time trial, with Gus Lawson claiming tenth and Olivia Poole 26th – the best of the Scots in the Under 17 event. The racing continued with the Scotland/Ride For Charlie team of Lawson, Poole and Zach Buchan finishing seventh in the mixed relay, while fellow Scot Joel Gillan finished 11th, while guesting with the South West Germany squad.
The short track events continued the strong showing of Scottish performances – with the pair of British Short Track champions continuing their form – Pentland Racers’ Lawson riding to eighth; with Deeside Thistle’s Poole in 12th.

Saturday’s Cross Country Olympic events would again show Olivia Poole’s form – with the Aberdeenshire rider finishing sixth place in the Under-16 event. Zach Buchan rode very well in the Under 16’s, finishing 23rd.
An early crash disrupted the under-17 race with both Joel Gillan and Gus Lawson affected. Lawson had to abandon due to injuries sustained in the crash, but there was an excellent recovery from Gillan – moving up the field from 140th to 65th place come the finish.
Overall, a massive learning experience for the team and for our coaches who we believe are still on their ferry back to Scotland.
