Safeguarding Training
Child Wellbeing and Protection in Sport (CPWS)
Scottish Cycling requires all those working in regulated roles (those roles which require a PVG) with Children to attend Chid Wellbeing and Protection in Sport (CWPS) courses.
In addition to this, those who have a qualification through British Cycling and rely on BC membership for insurance are required to meet the criteria that they set to validate their qualification. This is:
- An active BC membership
- Appropriate First Aid Qualification (completed every 3 years)
- Safeguarding training – CWPS for those operating in Scotland (completed every 3 years)
The list of roles that require CWPS training:
- Coach
- Mountain Bike Leader
- Activity Leader
- Wellbeing and Protection Officer
- Any other role which is deemed to require this
Child Wellbeing and Protection Officer Training (CWPO)
All WPO’s of clubs with Children or Protected adults require to undertake club Wellbeing and Protection Officer training. This is in addition to the CWPS training which is ideally completed before attending CWPO training.
Training Courses
Details of each of these training courses can be found on the course booking page.
The CWPS courses consist of:
- an eLearning module (Module 1): access to this is granted approximately 1 week from your course date.
- a 3-hour tutor-led workshop on the date of your course.
The WPO course is a 3-hour tutor led online session.
CWPS and CWPO training – you can attend a course organised by us, this will be more cycling specific, or you can attend a course organised by another sport. Both routes are valid and accepted by us.
sportscotland collates courses that are organised across the sporting sector, these can be found here SportScotland Training Calendar
CWPS Renewls
If you have completed CWPS training before, and the training is yet to expire, or is within 3 months of expiring, you are eligible to complete the CWPS Renewal Training.
The renewal training is solely eLearning and therefore more flexible to complete. The training is designed to broaden your knowledge of safeguarding by offering modules covering various safeguarding topics.

Safeguarding Training Mapping Process
In some cases, we can map safeguarding training from other organisations to fulfil our requirements. To do this, the training completed must meet these initial criteria before we assess further:
- Have been completed within the last 3 years
- Delivery must include a tutor-led discussion
- Course length must be at least 3-hours, unless completed annually
If your training meets these criteria then please contact us to discuss further.
