In France, Sean Flynn (Team Picnic PostNL) made his Paris-Roubaix debut on Sunday finishing his third monument of the season. Sean was well positioned before coming down in a crash, but he battled on a the Hell of the North to make it to the velodrome in Roubaix. There was no such luck of Callum Thornley (Red Bull Bora Hansgrohe Development) in the U23 race; unfortunately he came down in a crash, breaking both his shoulder and collarbone – we wish him a speedy recovery. In Spain there was a top 10 on General Classification for Flynn’s teammate Oscar Onley at Itzulia Basque Country, the Kelso riders’ form improving as the race went on.
There was also British Road Race Series action in the North East of England, the second round for the females, and the opening round for open competitors. In the open race, Tim Shoreman (Wheelbase Cabtech Castelli) was the best placed Scot in fourth, winning the bunch ‘sprint’ up and over Saltburn bank, with Alex Ball (BCC RT) also in the top 10. In the female race Handsling Alba were to the fore throughout, Edinburgh based Amelia Tyler stepping onto the podium in third, with teammate Lauren Dickson first Scot in eighth. In the series standings there are no fewer than four Scots in the top ten, Anna Flynn (Spectra) leading the way in sixth.
The British Downhill Series got underway this weekend in Wales, with Scottish riders to the fore across the board. Heather Wilson (AON Racing – Tourne Campervans) was second in the Junior Female category, teammate Stan Nisbett fourth in the Open equivalent. In the Elite races there was a fine third place finish for XC star turned downhiller Emily Carrick-Anderson (Peebles CC), with Reece Wilson (AON) sixth in the Open.
There were also Scots in MTB action over in Italy at the Marlene Südtirol Sunshine Race, which doubled up as a UCI XCO Junior Series race. Isla Short continued her great start to 2025 with a podium place, racing for the win throughout but hampered by a mechanical in the closing stages. In the Junior Open race Innes McDonald (SORT) was first Brit home in ninth in a world class field, whilst Freya Mowbray (SORT) was 28th in the female equivalent.
