The female-focused club in Glasgow ran seven sessions over the summer, bringing together regular club members and eight women who were new to the club.
The activity was centred around the theme of ‘cycling with confidence’, with three sessions specifically designed to help women feel more comfortable and confident on their bikes. The sessions aimed to create a friendly and inclusive environment, while removing some of the real or perceived barriers that can prevent women from getting involved in cycling.
Knowing that extra time would be given, that care would be taken, and that there would be no competitive pressure helped a number of riders feel comfortable joining the group. The response was so positive that the club plans to continue using the ‘cycling with confidence’ approach for future sessions.
The programme also included technical coaching from Kirsteen Durkin, who helped riders develop their bike-handling skills, including navigating tight corners, using gears effectively and riding more confidently on the road.
One Glasgow Gals rider said:
“What a buzz Kirsteen created for the Club! We’ve all been talking about the coaching session and passing on hints and tips, and I’ll be practising my figure of eights!”
Another rider highlighted the value of being part of a supportive group of women:
“Sharing an activity with other women is really powerful, exchanging ideas, just having a chat, listening to other experiences and generally gaining confidence being in a strong group of women.”
The sessions were supported through the Scottish Cycling Women & Girls Direct Support Fund, which was designed to help grow female membership within cycling clubs across Scotland. More than £20,000 was awarded to 25 clubs as part of the fund.
Glasgow Gals’ experience demonstrates the impact that creating welcoming, supportive opportunities can have in helping more women feel confident getting on their bikes and becoming part of a cycling community.
