Kiehlmann and Morrow take Scottish Gravel titles in Aberfoyle

The senior open race started at a fast tempo. The pack fractured leaving small groups of riders fighting the blustery conditions. Innes Ogilvie was among those who made a few attempts to get away from the larger leading group on descents, but the rest of the group led by Keihlmann were quick to shut them down.

A small group would still be together in the mid part of the race, which included defending champion Cameron Mason (Seven Racing). However it would be Patrick Kiehlmann (Royal Albert) that would make his way clear with half of the final 24km lap remaining. Kiehlmann then held off the chase from Mason, and crossed the line first to become Scottish National Champion, with Mason taking silver and Patrick Hughes winning bronze.

Handsling-Alba’s Beth Morrow swapped the paved roads for the fire roads of Aberfoyle to take the senior female title with Rebecca Saunderson (Studio Velo) taking silver and Morrow’s teammate Amelia Tyler finishing in third to take the bronze medal. Ava Luce (Brother UK-OnForm) won the junior title. After a good battle, it was Joel Gillan (Scotia Offroad RT) who claimed the junior open title from Raphael Jacquemet-Ross (Spokes RT) with Ross Eastaugh (Scotia Offroad RT) in third.

Falkirk Junior BC’s Gregor McNaught scored the Youth victory from Harrogate Nova’s Josh Stewart, with a strong ride from Thomas Macleod (Falkirk Junior BC) to round off the podium, while Emie Smith (Stirling BC) won the Youth female title.

There was more delight for Falkirk Juniors with Alexander Mullen winning the Under 14 open title from Angus Dowens (West Lothian Clarion) and Cobey Stewart (SteppingStanes). While Boo Williams turned her road bronze into gravel gold, with victory in for the Clydesdale Colts rider, with Rose Martin taking the silver.

Congratulations too to our Under 12 champions Euan McDonald and Lucy Dixon.

There was a packed field in the Masters categories too.

Frankie Lochrie (Galloway Hillbillies) claimed the Masters 30 win from Ben Gordon (Moray Firth) with Grant Scott (Ronde CC) taking the bronze medal. Scotia Series winner Izzy Filor (Hervelo) would put the road form to dirt to take the Masters 30 win from Dundee Thistle’s Rebecca Trimble.

James McCallum (Meta Bike Division) would take yet another Scottish title to his collection with the victory in the Masters 40 field, crossing the line with a touching tribute to the late Rab Wardell; Thomas Bruno (VC Glasgow South) would finish second with Masters criterium champion Richard MacDonald (Vanelli Project Go) in third.

After a strong ride with the front senior riders defending champion Caroline Livesey would retain her Masters 40 crown in Aberfoyle, with Sofia Christiansen (Galloway Hillbillies) riding to silver, with Natalie Stevenson (Glasgow Ivy) taking bronze.

The Masters 50 victory went to Mark Walker (Deeside Thistle) from Murray Swanson (Pedal Power RT) in second, with Wayne Barr (Velocity 44 RT) taking the bronze medal. Julie Fitzpatrick winning the female title. Kenny Kentley won the Masters 60+ title, from Victor Allan, with Brian Garrioch in third place.

Scottish Cycling and event organisers Outsider Events are undertaking a review improve processes in order to avoid future confusion at future events.

Scottish BMX Open

Sunday saw a great day of racing at the Scottish BMX Open Championships at Clydebank with 18 titles decided across the afternoon.

Lewis Cook claimed the always competitive Open 17-29 victory for Cumbernauld Centurions, besting teammate Ben Fitzsimmons and Western Titans Lewis Collins-Nimmo.

It was a Centurions lockout, as Alexis McCartney won out in the Female 17-29 category, from Tillie McCrum and Niamh Whitsey. However it was Eilidh Watson (Cumbernauld Centurions) who won the combined multi-category final, the 15-16 rider besting her more senior clubmates.

Centurions’ Brodie Geddes would take the Open 15 win from Daniel Borokinni (Titans), Fergus Soutar, riding an age group up, finished between the two – but claimed the Open 14 victory, as Movement Park’s Lucas Watson took silver. Titans’ Rhys Dougan claimed the Open 15 bronze.

Western Titans would have success themselves to shout about, Ruby Warren – continuing her great form with the 13-14 win, as Holly Diver followed close behind. Cumbernauld’s Holly Hume would finish third.

British Inter-Regionals

What a weekend it was for the Young Team, as Team Scotland won out as overall winners at the British Inter-Regional Track Championships, besting teams from Britain and Ireland in Glasgow.

Consistency was the order of the weekend – with Scotland’s team accruing a healthy lead at the end of Day one after wins in the girls and boys’ sprint, boys’ tempo race and girls scratch race. Third place in the opening event of Sunday – the boys’ team sprint was countered by the following seven events seeing Scottish riders finish no lower than second – as nearest challengers Wales would falter in the keirin events.

Congratulations to the team of Femke McKenna, Mairi Nicholson, Millie Boothman, Zara Main, Andrew Levinson, Reuben Mclardie, Ezra Ndiuini and Micah Myles for claiming the title.
