Junior Track Euros
Cottbus in Germany was the venue for the UEC European Junior and U23 Track Championships last week with two of Scotland’s rising junior stars representing Great Britain.
Lotte Wardrop opened the team sprint, riding in position one, delivering her two teammates in a strong position as the British trio won the bronze medal in the team sprint in a time of 1:09.685 on the elongated 333m outdoor track.
In the endurance events, Melanie Rowe was making her debut as a first-year junior in Germany. The Aberdeenshire rider rode to sixth place in the omnium, impressing greatly with second in the elimination race on Thursday.
However, it would be on Sunday’s madison that the Scot would make her way onto the podium. Partnering with Phoebe Taylor, the Great Britain duo scored consistently throughout the early stages of the madison. Into the final sprint and any one of the British, Italian or Independent Athletes’ Teams could claim the gold, the British squad crossed the line in third and were tied for points with the Italian, who they just missed out on second to on countback. A bronze medal, to round off an excellent performance from the two riders.
National Road Series’
Slightly closer to home. The latest round of the British Youth Circuit Series went ahead at the LeeValley VeloPark in London.
Zara Main (Deeside Thistle) claimed victory in the Youth A race. It’s a second win in as many weeks for the Aberdeenshire rider, who also won out in at the prestigious Argenta Classic in Belgium last weekend. There was also a strong ride from Mille Boothman (Glasgow Riderz) in fifth, who won the combativity award for spending the majority of the 75 minute race off the front of the field.
The elite riders were spending their Sunday at Lancaster Grand Prix.
Morven Yeoman (DAS-Hutchinson) retained her lead in the National Road Series with a second place finish in the North West of England. The Lanarkshire rider was in the key group of four that made a gap of two minutes over the peloton behind.
Yeoman would be the only rider able to stay with the attacks of Lily Martin (Loughborough Lightning) with three laps to go, however DAS teammate Lucy Lee was able to regain contact with the front of the race. The Scottish rider and her teammate tried to double up attacks on Martin, but were counterattacked late on; which had no response. Yeoman was able to cross the line in second and retain her solid lead in the Series, while Arianne Holland was able to claim ninth place behind – a second top ten in the series for the Handsling-Alba rider.
