British CX Series
South Shields just outside Newcastle was the venue for the second round of the British National Cyclocross Trophy, with several Scots making the short journey to Northumberland.
Anna Flynn (Spectra) impressed once again to come home third in a thrilling female elite race, which saw the podium spots only separated by 16 seconds. The Edinburgh rider battled through the field in a classy ride from the back of the grid. Fellow Scot Ishbel Strathdee (Team HUPcc) was the only female rider to hop the hurdles on her way to eighth.
Scottish champion Lewis Martin was cursed by not one but three separate mechanical incidents, on his way to a strong fifth place finish in the elite men. Sam Chisholm (Team HUPcc) was on fine form to take third place in the U23 classification, as a by-product of a strong ride that saw him finish just outside the top ten.
New Trinity Racing signing Arabella Blackburn impressed in the juniors with a third place finish, with Freya Mowbray (Scotia Offroad RT) in sixth place. There was top ten another finish for Innes McDonald (Scotia Offroad RT) after a ride to ninth.
It was a big week for the three juniors – as they were among the cohort that were inducted into the Olympic Development Squad as part of the Great Britain Cycling Team.
Olivia Poole (Deeside Thistle) impressed again in the under-16 race with a strong second place for the Aberdeenshire rider, with fellow Scot Mairi Dowens (West Lothian Clarion) in tenth.
In the under-14’s action, there was more success with Josh Stewart (Steppingstanes Youth Cycling) claiming the victory and the Pentland Racers duo of Guy Rorke and Sam Kingan coming home in seventh and eighth place respectively.
London 3-day
Eilidh Shaw, Neah Evans, Katie Archibald and Callum Twelves travelled down to the Lee Valley Velodrome in London for the London 3 day track event.
The pairing of Evans and Archibald impressed early on with wins in Friday’s madison chase, and team elimination, but a stumble when exiting the track saw Archibald suffer a dislocated shoulder – ending her weekend prematurely. Evans was paired with Robyn Clay for Saturday and Sunday’s racing, with the Aberdeenshire rider winning Sunday’s derny race.
UAE’s ADQ Eilidh Shaw was paired with Miriam Jessett with the duo in the thick of the racing – with the pair claiming impressive second in Saturday’s afternoon’s madison chase.
